Tipperary Station School was one of 20 schools selected to receive a grant sponsored by the Wrigley Foundation in 2016 for the 2016 Litter Less project.
Tipperary Station School, 29 km off the Daly River Road and 190 km from Darwin, is a very small School in the Northern Territory with only six students (four pictured in their garden).
They partnered with St Francis Xavier Catholic School at Naiyu Community at Daly River to hold a Litter Action Day. Tipperary Station School started their project at the end of term two by discussing litter problems, and assigning the students to each write a cinquain poem, and the poems were entered at the Adelaide River Agricultural Show where they took out all of the prizes along with the Best in Show recycling exhibit.
Tipperary School teacher Jaky Ryan shared a poem by Darnell Hudson, an 8 year old indigenous student (below), saying, “I love his use of poetic licence with ‘Undeadly’.”
The Eco-Schools program clearly demonstrates that it provides incentive and opportunity for even the smallest schools in very remote areas to achieve great things.
