Mount Liebig (Watiyawanu) wins 2022 Northern Territory Sustainable Community Tidy Town Award

The proud MacDonnell Regional Council township of Mount Liebig (Watiyawanu) has won the 2022 Northern Territory Sustainable Community Tidiest Town accolade announced in Darwin.

Keep Australia Beautiful Council (NT) CEO, Heimo Schober said Mount Liebig’s (Watiyawanu) key stakeholder’s continued dedication and collaborative work over the last years, improving liveability, keeping their community tidy and beautiful, has certainly made it a deserving stand-out community yet again. 

“The residents living in the semi-arid MacDonnell region of Northern Territory continue to embrace the Territory Sustainable Community Tidy Towns actions and program, with many in the community working together in corporation and collaboration to achieve better community outcomes and this prestigious Award,” Mr Schober said.

“The township’s strong culture of continuous improvement and community participation helped the MacDonnell Desert community win the competition yet again, they’re continually achieving ‘new norms’ all the time.

“The MacDonnell Council Staff, Traditional Owners and the residents of Mount Liebig (Watiyawanu) all deserve this win for their efforts and dedication to ensure their community is the Territory’s Tidiest Town and Sustainable Community over the past 12 months.

“This is again another MacDonnell Regional Council Community outright win. It is inspiring to see a Regional Council consistently producing Territory Sustainable Tidy Town winning Communities.”

The township of Mount Liebig (Watiyawanu) continues to demonstrate great community collaboration, pride and leadership in local sustainability practices and education, and sets a wonderful example for other remote Territory townships to follow.

“I congratulate the MacDonnell Regional Council for their leadership and support inspiring Mount Liebig (Watiyawanu) to win this Award,” Mr Schober added.  

“Again, the MacDonnell Regional Council have been awarded a majority of the categories at the 2022 Territory Sustainable Community Tidy Town Awards,” Schober said.

Mount Liebig (Watiyawanu) officially became the ‘Territory’s Tidiest Town’ again and is now the Territory’s Finalist after winning the overall NT Award as well as receiving the Category Award for ‘Best Medium Territory Tidy Towns Community.’

As the Territory’s 2022 Tidiest Town, the MacDonnell region community of Mount Liebig (Watiyawanu) will represent the Northern Territory at the Keep Australia Beautiful, Australian Sustainable community Tidy Towns Awards in Tasmania King Island next year in 2023. 

The Northern Territory Sustainable Community Tidy Towns Awards program recognises and acknowledges the commitment, collaboration and hard work undertaken by remote and regional community key stakeholders, schools, individuals, stores, Rangers, Aboriginal Corporations, businesses and Councils. It showcases innovative ideas and initiatives that improve social and environmental development, plus circular economy sustainability in regional areas of the Northern Territory towards UNSDG’s and 2030 plus 2050 climate targets.
